Dive sites
Known by many names—Fish Tank, Fish Factory, and Stingray City—this dive site lives up to the hype. It's one of the best sites in the Maldives for spotting a wide variety of moray eels, including giant morays, leopard morays, yellowhead, sooty head, and reticulated morays.
Divers will also encounter different species of stingrays, such as black-spotted rays and mangrove rays, making it a favorite for macro lovers and critter hunters.
Due to variable current conditions, Miyaru Kandu is best suited for advanced divers, though on calmer days, it can be accessible to intermediate-level divers as well. Expect an adrenaline-filled drift dive with big fish action and clear visibility.
Divers can expect frequent sightings of reef sharks, nurse sharks, and other large pelagic species cruising along the drop-offs or out in the blue. The sandy areas are ideal for spotting stingrays, eagle rays, and resting sharks, offering exceptional opportunities for underwater photography and big animal encounters.
Just 90 minutes by dhoni from Malé, Lankan Manta Point is one of the Maldives' most popular manta ray dive sites. From May to November, mantas gather at cleaning stations along the outer reef, offering spectacular up-close encounters.
There are two main manta cleaning stations here:
– A shallow station at around 15 meters
– A deeper one at approximately 25 meters
Expect moderate to strong currents, so this dive is best suited for intermediate to advanced divers. Ideal for underwater photography and wide-angle encounters.
Hulhumale Neru is a thrilling blue water dive located in open ocean near Malé, recommended only for advanced divers with deep diving experience and multiple logged dives. The dive typically takes place around 30 meters, with extended time in midwater and frequent boat traffic—making a DSMB (surface marker buoy) essential for safety.
This site offers the rare opportunity to spot a wide range of Maldivian megafauna, including:
– Tiger sharks
– Bull sharks
– Spinner sharks
– Lemon sharks
– Giant hammerheads
– Guitarfish
– Grey reef sharks
For big animal enthusiasts, Hulhumale Neru is one of the best shark diving sites in the Maldives.
The calm conditions and shallow depth make it suitable for all levels of divers, and it's a dream location for underwater photographers looking to capture close-up action of Maldivian marine life in a truly surreal setting.
The southern reef wall features dramatic overhangs and cavities starting at 10 meters and descending to 30+ meters deeper into the channel. Along the edge, it’s common to see grey reef sharks, white-tip sharks, and schools of jacks—making this an ideal site for big fish lovers and experienced divers.
Inside the caves and under the ledges, divers may encounter whitetip reef sharks, stingrays, and occasionally nurse sharks resting in the shadows. The site also boasts vibrant hard and soft corals at shallower depths (around 5 meters), making it a beautiful and diverse dive from start to safety stop.
